One of the best things about cardio kickboxing? You don't need a gym, a bag, or any equipment. Just your body, a little space, and the willingness to show up.
Here are some of the foundational moves you can string together into a powerful home workout — no experience required.
Before You Start
Clear a space about 6 feet by 6 feet. Wear supportive shoes or go barefoot if you don't require support or won't be performing any impact moves. Start slow to get the form and technique right, then build your speed and power as you get comfortable. Always keep a slight bend in your elbows and knees and engage your core throughout.
Basic Straight Punches: Jab-Cross
The foundation of every kickboxing combo.
- Stand in a fighting stance: dominant foot back, hands up by your chin, elbows in.
- Jab: extend your front hand straight out, rotating your fist so your palm faces down at full extension. Snap it back quickly.
- Cross: drive your back hand forward with your whole body — rotate your hips and pivot your back foot for power. Return to guard.
Do it: Check out this video for correct form and technique.
Angles Punches: Hooks and Uppercuts
Both hooks and uppercuts target your core and builds rotational power.
- For hooks, from your fighting stance, bend your front arm to 90 degrees.
- Swing it horizontally across your body, driving the movement from your hips and core — not just your arm.
- Keep your elbow at shoulder height throughout the movement. Bend your knees to deliver hooks to the body.
- For uppercuts, bend your knees, keep your elbow close to your side, and drive up through the legs to deliver an uppercut under the chin.
- When delivering an uppercut to the body, it's often called a dig.
- Uppercuts use the legs to generate the power.
Do it: Check out this video for correct form and technique.
Push Kicks: Front, Back, and Side
A full-body move that fires up your glutes, hip flexors, and core.
- Lift your knee to hip height, then extend your foot forward in a pushing motion — like you're pushing a door open with the ball (front push kick) or blade of your foot (back and side push kicks).
- Chamber the kneed to control the return. Don't let your foot drop — lower it with intention.
- Keep your standing leg slightly bent and your core tight.
Do it: The second combo in this short demonstrates really strong push kick form and technique.
Slap Kick: The Roundhouse
A good roundhouse is one of the most satisfying moves in the lineup.
- Pivot on your standing foot, turning your hip toward the target.
- Swing your kicking leg in a wide arc, making contact with the top of your foot or shin (imagine hitting a pad at hip height).
- Return your foot to the ground with control.
Do it: There is a really good example of a roundhouse in this short, blink and you might miss it! Go slow at first — form over speed.
Move 5: Knee Strike
A core-crusher that also works your hip flexors and glutes.
- From your fighting stance, grab an imaginary opponent's shoulders (or just reach your hands forward).
- Drive one knee up powerfully toward your chest while pulling your hands down to meet it.
- Lower with control and alternate sides.
Do it: There are also very strong knee strike examples in this short, a fundamental you will see throughout my kickboxing choreography.
